Training

The Happy Gender Project can tailor our trainings to your particular school or organizations needs.  Trainings can be geared to teachers, students, parents and/or child care workers (such as in foster care settings or aftercare programs).

Trainings and Services:

School consultation (1-2hrs):

  1. Meet with teachers and administrators to explore how the school is currently addressing issues of diversity, including gender expression and sexual orientation.
  2. Identify both strengths and challenges particular to the individual school (what is the involvement and support from parents; out-teachers/administrators, students who are presenting as gender non-conforming (GNC), harassment and bullying issues).
  3. What legal responsibilities does the school have (based in local and state law) to provide a safe learning environment for gender non-conforming students AND employees.
  4. Discuss possible strategies to organize and create school culture change (including identifying teacher, administrative and possibly student leaders to form coalition).

Teacher Training (1 1/2 – 3hrs):

  1. Transgender 101: Introducing key concepts.
  2. Narratives of transgender and GNC kids and their families.
  3. How an inclusive classroom/school environment serves ALL students.
  4. 35 Ways to accept and Support a GNC child.
  5. How to talk to children and teenagers about gender.
  6. How teachers can respond to negative slurs, harassment and misinformation in the classroom.
  7. Structural changes to support all students (restrooms, forms, overnight trips, locker rooms, etc.)
  8. Constructing a plan for individual students and families that need support.
  9. Integrating voices of GNC/transgender people into school curriculum.
  10. Addressing parental and community concerns.

Parent and Community Training (1 ½-2hrs):

  1. Transgender 101: Introducing key concepts.
  2. Narratives of transgender and GNC kids and their families.
  3. Why family acceptance is critical.
  4. 35 Ways to accept and Support a GNC child.
  5. How to talk to children and teenagers about gender.
  6. How to challenge the binary in your own family and community.
  7. Raising kids who are allies.
  8. Addressing parental and community concerns/Information about the school’s plan to create a culture that affirms difference and diversity.

Parent/Family Consultation (based on individual needs):

  1. We provide advocacy and consultation for parents who need assistance to obtain the support of administrators and teachers at their child’s school.
  2. Work directly with school to formulate plans to support a student who is GNC/transgender.
  3. Educate parents about their child’s rights to a safe and affirming environment and provide legal and emotional resources.

  Youth to youth: Panel of transgender young people tell their stories: (1 hour)
